Being a shareholder
Owning shares means you own part of a company. The more shares you have, the more of the company you own. You can buy and sell shares in any company that is publicly listed on a stock exchange. Standard Life plc is a publicly listed company – managed by its directors and owned by its shareholders.
Being a shareholder of Standard Life gives you certain important rights such as:
Attending and voting at the Annual General Meeting
Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) gives our shareholders the chance to meet our Board of Directors, find out the latest news about key issues from within the business and vote on important resolutions.
As one of our shareholders, you will always be invited to the AGM – we will let you know well in advance when and where each meeting will be held.
Receiving shareholder communications
We need to send you quite a lot of information each year, for example, the
Annual Report and Accounts,
AGM guide and a
voting form. Our aim is to do this in a way that is good for you, good for our business and good for the planet.
One of the most environmentally friendly ways to receive shareholder communications is by clicking a weblink in an email. And it means you get all the important information quickly and securely. Over 500,000 of our shareholders have already chosen to receive their shareholder communications this way. Another 900,000 receive letters telling them where to find the key communications online.
Only 6% of our shareholders have chosen to receive full paper copies of everything.
Receiving dividends, if these are declared and paid
If Standard Life makes a profit, our shareholders may receive a share of this as dividend payments. If Standard Life does not perform well, this may lead to our dividends being reduced or no dividend being paid at all.
See
Dividends for more information.
Receiving share account statements
If your shares are in the Standard Life Share Account, our registrar – Computershare – will send you a share account statement at least once a year. The statement will give you the details of any Standard Life plc shares you have bought and sold since the date of your last share account statement.
