Diversity in the UK

Standard Life's first-ever diversity survey

In May 2007, we launched our first-ever diversity survey and asked our UK permanent employees to help us “paint the picture of diversity” at Standard Life. We outlined our plans to do this in our Corporate Responsibility Report 2006. These results are being discussed within Standard Life to identify appropriate actions to be taken.

Nearly eight thousand employees received a personal email from Anne Gunther, chief executive of Standard Life Bank and head of our Diversity Strategy Group, inviting them to take part in the survey.

Over 5,500 staff took part

The survey was conducted online, was on an anonymous basis, ran for two weeks and generated over 5,500 responses - nearly 72% of those surveyed. We are delighted by this enthusiastic and overwhelmingly honest response.

A few point to note about the results

  • For every question we offered a “Prefer not to answer” response; this or a blank response accounted for an average of 2.7% of responses across all questions.  These are shown together as “unknown” in the presentation below.

  • Care should be taken before drawing conclusions from findings, particularly for some analyses, as data is likely to have included rogue responses.  As subsequent surveys take place, findings should stabilise and permit trends to emerge.

  • Figures may not add up to 100% because of rounding.
