Equal Opportunity and Equal Treatment policy
IntroductionApplicationMinimum policy standardsIntroduction
The Equal Opportunity and Equal Treatment policy (the Policy) has been established
to set minimum operational standards throughout the group. It provides a
clear framework for an effective system of internal control, which ensures
that Standard Life remains an equal opportunity employer applying standards,
which are fair, and consistent with the abilities and skills of staff. The
group values diversity and respects individual differences.
Each group company is required to adhere to the minimum standards contained
within this Policy. Any policy adopted by individual group companies may
contain further provisions, provided that these are not inconsistent with
this Policy.
The group promotes equal opportunity in all areas of employment, from vacancy
advertising, selection, recruitment and training, to working conditions,
compensation and reasons for termination of employment.
Staff throughout the group will be treated equally, according to abilities
and skills, regardless of age, sex, marital or civil partnership status,
family situation, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, nationality,
citizenship, colour, race, religious or personal belief, political opinion,
membership or non-membership of a trade union, status as ex-offenders (subject
to statutory exclusions), health, HIV/Aids status, disability, or pregnancy.
The compliance of all staff is essential for the success of this policy.
Behaviours or actions that are contrary to the purpose of this policy and
the legislation it is based on will be considered as serious matters and
may lead to action in line with the applicable group company disciplinary
procedure.
We will monitor equal opportunities and gather data in line with legal requirements
and best practice. Analysis of this information provides the basis for appropriate
actions to promote equal opportunity and eliminate unlawful direct and indirect
discrimination. As legislation and best practice evolve, the group may add
to the categories that are monitored. The Board and senior management fully
endorse this policy.

Application
This policy is applicable to all group companies. Where appropriate, the
requirements of this Policy should be communicated to all contractors and
suppliers so that they understand and adhere to the Policy as it relates
to their own responsibilities.
All reasonable efforts must be undertaken to integrate the standards of
this Policy into any joint venture entity.

Minimum Policy Standards
The standards applied in each group company will be no less than those detailed
below:
All group companies will:
- Ensure that recruitment and selection decisions, allocation of work, contribution
reviews, training, promotion and career development decisions can be justified
on the basis of skills, knowledge and talent. Those involved in recruiting
and selection decisions should always seek advice from HR on equal opportunities
issues.
- Work to create and sustain a climate in which staff can and feel able to
contribute to their best. This means treating one another fairly, equally
and professionally in a way that brings dignity and respect.
- Ensure that a culture of mutual dignity and respect is engendered
(by the group company, and by colleagues) where unfair discrimination
or harassment is not tolerated.
- Ensure that staff are encouraged to raise concerns with HR if they are
aware of situations where the policy is not being applied.
Confidential advice and information about working with colleagues with disabilities
and special needs is available from local occupational health specialists
or HR who have practical experience in this area.
