Definition of Corporate Responsibility

Why it's important

As part of our commitment to doing things differently, we are building lifetime relationships with our customers. We can ensure that this happens by creating a sustainable business – but this requires a long-term commitment.

We live in a rapidly changing world, which means we have to work to stay focused on identifying and dealing with our impacts on society, in areas such as climate change and education to employability.

Large companies play an important role in the world around them and can have a major impact on people, the environment and other businesses. That's why the public, the press and other stakeholders rightly expect companies to minimise any negative impact – and to give something back to the communities they work in.

These expectations are backed up by new industry guidelines on social, environmental and ethical matters. Issued by the Association of British Insurers, these focus on managing risk and enhancing corporate value.

Many people benefit from our commitment to corporate responsibility (CR) – including our investors, staff, communities and the people and companies we buy from and sell through. We believe strongly that looking after these people makes good business sense for us too.

A key part of our business

Standard Life takes its social and environmental responsibilities seriously and our well-established policies and practices demonstrate our long-term commitment. CR is business as usual for us – we see it as managing our social and environmental responsibilities well – and we seek to incorporate it fully into the way we manage our company on a daily basis.

Because CR is becoming increasingly important on many fronts, we're constantly aiming to reach new, higher standards. We're also trying to make it easier for everyone to find out what we are doing, why we're doing it and how we're managing our progress. These pages are intended to give an overview of our approach and how it's developing.

Making it work

We are commited to doing business responsibly. This means running our business to high ethical, legal and professional standards and actively managing our social and environmental impacts on society. Being a responsible corporate citizen is a central part of ensuring that we succeed as a business in the long-term.

We know that CR is the right thing to do, but equally important are the business benefits for companies with a good track record in CR. The extent to which our commitment to CR informs our business is reflected in the fact that we have a Board CR Committee chaired by the Group Chairman, Gerry Grimstone.
